Empowering local partners: UN Women Tajikistan leads knowledge exchange in Shahritus

Shahritus, 31 May 2024 – UN Women Tajikistan facilitated a visit to Shahritus District for partners as part of the “Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention and Response in Tajikistan” project. Participants included partners from public organizations and members of working groups from Istaravshan, Dushanbe, and Varzob districts. The visit aimed to foster peer learning and the exchange of best practices among local governments and civil society organizations.

The Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response in Tajikistan Project aims to strengthen partnerships between the Government of Tajikistan and civil society, focusing on reducing gender-based violence, including domestic violence and abuse. Operating in Shahritus (Khatlon), Istaravshan (Sogd), Varzob (DRS) disctricts, and Dushanbe, the project strengthens capacity of local partners and, integrates service provisions through civil society organizations (CSOs) and Women's Rights Organizations.

This visit prioritized strengthening CSOs and partners’ capacities and raising awareness through an open exchange of ideas, knowledge, and best practices. During the visit, participants engaged in the discussion with the Department of Women and Family Affairs and visited public organizations "Bonuvoni Fardo," "Chashma," and "Shifo" in the Shahritus district. They also learned about the Department of Women and Family Affairs' efforts to address gender-based violence against women and girls. Public organizations in Shahritus district presented their work, highlighting their initiatives to prevent gender-based violence spoke about interactions and cooperation with the local authorities and referral mechanism to support survivors. Presentations illustrated successful cases of the implementations and support mechanisms for victims of violence in the Shahritus district.

Shahritus was chosen for its integrated approach to addressing gender-based violence, highlighting effective collaboration between government agencies and public organizations. The visit concluded with productive discussions, identifying opportunities for future cooperation.

The visit was conducted within the framework of the “Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response in Tajikistan” project, implemented by UN Women Tajikistan in partnership with public organization “Gender and Development” and funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

UN Women has worked in Tajikistan since 1999 to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Aligned with the country’s national development priorities, UN Women supports Tajikistan’s efforts to implement its gender equality commitments by focusing on women empowerment, ending violence against women and peace and security and engendering humanitarian action.
