May 25, 2024. Dushanbe. – UN Women Tajikistan, in partnership with Central Asian Football Association (CAFA), celebrated World Football Day in Tajikistan. The event coincided with the final match day of the CAFA U15 Women’s Championship 2024, featuring two thrilling matches. Young female footballers from Tajikistan, Iran, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Uzbekistan took to the field to display their skills and love for sports.

The award ceremony recognized the contributions of talented young female footballers, head coaches, and team managers.

Football's broad appeal and accessibility make it a potent tool for promoting health and well-being. While football has traditionally been a male-dominated sport, it can serve as a vital platform for advancing gender equality and empowering women and girls, both on and off the field. It can serve as a catalyst for social inclusion, fostering unity and breaking down barriers between diverse communities. It can also provide a space where individuals from various backgrounds come together to promote mutual understanding, inclusion, respect, and solidarity.

Joining the event, Malika Jurakulova, UN Women Tajikistan Country Programme Manager and Head of Office, emphasized, "UN Women actively supports non-traditional sports for women and girls in Tajikistan. This event is another opportunity for Tajikistan to demonstrate its commitment to gender equality, women's and girls’ empowerment, and women's leadership. We believe you will be role models for others, and we are ready to support you in every way we can.”

Malika Jurakulova, UN Women Tajikistan Country Program Manager and Head of Office, Tajikistan Football Federation (TFF) Vice President Mr. Alisher Urunov, and CAFA General Secretary Mr. Ulugbek Karimov were all in attendance.

UN Women has worked in Tajikistan since 1999 to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Aligned with the country’s national development priorities, UN Women supports Tajikistan’s efforts to implement its gender equality commitments by focusing on women empowerment, ending violence against women and peace and security and engendering humanitarian action.
