Media Advisory: International Conference on "Charting the Future 30 Years after Beijing: Effective Institutional Mechanisms for the Advancement of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment"

What: The UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, in collaboration with the Government of Albania, invites you to the international conference “Charting the Future 30 Years after Beijing: Effective Institutional Mechanisms for the Advancement of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment”. This event marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a global blueprint for gender equality and empowering women and girls.

Ministers and senior officials from Europe, Central Asia, and beyond will discuss strategies to strengthen institutional mechanisms for advancing gender equality, building partnerships, and sharing effective practices. 

The conference outcomes will contribute to the Beijing+30 Regional Review Meeting scheduled in October 2024, as well as the subsequent Global Review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action at the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Adopted in 1995, the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) is considered a foundational agenda for women’s empowerment, recognized globally as a prerequisite for achieving equality, development, and peace.

Who: Notable speakers and key invitees, among others, include:

  • Albana Koçiu, Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albania 
  • Belen Sanz Luque, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia 
  • Dea Nini, Human Rights Defender, Albania 
  • High-level officials from the Council of Europe, Spain, Canada, Georgia, Tajikistan and Bosnia and Herzegovina

How: The international conference will feature three interactive panels:

  • Strengthening institutional mechanisms for gender equality: Discussing best practices to enhance the authority, capacities, and resources of institutional mechanism 
  • Building and sustaining partnerships: Exploring how to create and maintain multistakeholder alliances to safeguard gender equality progress
  • Global exchange: Welcoming international participants to share case studies, experiences, and strategies. 

The event will conclude with a ceremony where Institutional mechanisms will be encouraged to commit to further promoting gender equality in their respective countries.
