Despite authorities’ continuous efforts, a poor economy, domestic violence, low public awareness of human trafficking, and misperceptions about promises for a work place or marriage mean that human trafficking of women and girls remains a serious concern in Albania. The media play an important role in the fight against trafficking and gender-based violence, especially by raising community awareness of human trafficking and suggesting ways to prevent it and by putting pressure on authorities to act.

Based on monitoring of print media from 1 February-31 December 2014, this publication gives a comprehensive overview on how Albania’s print media reports on trafficking cases. It identifies key issues and offers journalists, public institutions and other actors a set of recommendations to improve reporting on trafficking of women and girls and thereby more effectively fight trafficking. These recommendations seek to eliminate the current gap between the media, as a partner against human trafficking, and relevant public institutions.

Media leaders, journalists, students, police officers and civil society can benefit from the findings of this publication, Printed Media Monitoring on Trafficking of Women and Girls.
