UN Women Europe and Central Asia Regional Office Statement on Attacks in Ukraine

Date:

UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia strongly condemns the large-scale attacks by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation on 23 and 24 April, which targeted civilians including women and girls in nine regions across Ukraine.

On 23 April, a drone strike killed nine workers in Dnipro — seven of them women. On 24 April, Kyiv endured one of the most intense and prolonged assaults since the start of the full-scale war. At least 12 people were killed and over 87 injured, including five children and a pregnant woman. In March alone, 53 women and 4 girls were killed, while 378 women and 29 girls were injured.

UN Women stands in solidarity with those affected and calls for a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine — one that is rooted in the protection of civilians and the full respect of international humanitarian law. The rights, safety, and leadership of women and girls must be at the heart of all peace efforts, especially so that women who have survived war crimes have access to justice and reparations.

We urge increased and sustained support to women’s rights organizations leading the response on the ground, as we work toward a future where women and girls can live in safety, dignity, and equality, free from the horrors of war.
