15 March 2022 - The anniversary photo exhibition "UN-Kazakhstan: 30 years of cooperation to promote gender equality and empowerment of women" launched at the UN Headquarters in New York (USA). The photos demonstrate major gender equality achievements of the nation during 30 years of independence.

"UN Women welcomes Kazakhstan's efforts in addressing gender equality issues. In the last year alone, the country has taken a few important steps in this direction: it joined the GEF Action Coalitions on gender-based violence and economic justice and rights; adopted the National Action Plan for the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security; Kazakhstan completely abolished the list of 191 professions previously prohibited for women. We will continue to support the further empowerment of girls and women in Kazakhstan," said Maria Dotsenko, UN Women Representative in Kazakhstan.

Women and girls make up half of Kazakhstan's population and almost half of the country's workforce. Women prevail in medicine, education and science. 55% of civil servants in Kazakhstan are women. The share of women with higher education also exceeds the share of men who have graduated from higher education.

Kazakhstan became the first state in Central Asia to adopt the Gender Equality Strategy in 2006. And in 2016, the nation adopted the Concept on Family and Gender Policy until 2030. Also, for the first time in the region, the country opened a Library of Gender Projects, which became the basis for the Central Asian Virtual Community of Practice, created with the support of the UN and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the region.

The exhibition organizers: UN Women Kazakhstan, National Commission for Women Affairs, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan and the Permanent Mission of Kazakhstan to the UN. The exhibition is held under the 66th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66).
