Interview: “Change Happens Through Speaking Up and Taking Action”
Date:
This year’s International Day of the Girl, themed “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” highlights the power of girls' voices to inspire hope and drive urgent action. While today’s generation of girls faces immense challenges – from climate crises to pushback on human rights – they continue to act courageously, envisioning a world where they are protected, respected, and empowered to reach their limitless potential. In this interview, Milica shares her perspective on girls' rights, her journey into activism, and her vision for a more equal and just world. A young human rights activist and student at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Food at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje (UKIM), Milica has been actively involved with the National Roma Centrum in Kumanovo since she was a teenager. Her commitment to challenging discrimination and advocating for marginalized communities, especially Roma people, has made her a powerful voice for change.
Could you share a bit about yourself and your journey into activism?
I am Milica Stojkovikj, a 19-year-old student passionate about human rights, equality, and tolerance. Since I was 13, I have been involved with the National Roma Centrum in Kumanovo, which has been a significant part of my life and growth as an activist. Growing up, I saw a lot of injustices, and I felt compelled to speak up, especially for marginalized communities like the Roma people. I believe in the power of standing up for what is right, and that is what drives me every day.
What inspired you to start speaking up for girls' rights and to get involved in gender equality activism?
The everyday injustices I witness inspired me. Even today, girls are often expected to stay silent and accept outdated norms that limit their opportunities. It frustrates me to see girls judged or pressured into specific roles based on their gender. I am determined to change that mindset and create a world where girls can dream big and live freely, without discrimination or judgment. I believe that if we want change, we need to speak up and take action and that is exactly what I am doing.
In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges girls face today, especially in the context of global issues?
Girls face unique challenges that are often overlooked, like limited access to education, safety, and equal opportunities. Issues like climate change and poverty only make these vulnerabilities worse, leaving girls disproportionately affected. When resources are scarce, education for girls is usually the first thing sacrificed. It is essential that we create environments where girls can thrive, regardless of these global crises. Only then can we unlock their full potential and build a more equitable world.
How do you see girls around the world responding to global challenges?
Girls everywhere are stepping up to tackle these challenges head-on. Whether it is leading climate strikes or advocating for better access to education, young women are not waiting for permission to change the world – they are already doing it. For example, I have seen girls in local communities taking charge of environmental projects or working on educational initiatives that promote equal rights. They are making waves, but they need more support to amplify their efforts and make a lasting impact.
Why do you think it is essential for girls to have a voice in shaping their future?
Girls need to have a say in their future because it affects them directly. If we let others make decisions for us, we lose control over our lives. Having a voice means having the power to influence change, and I believe girls should start using their voices from a young age. By speaking up, they can contribute to a society that values everyone’s rights and freedoms. When girls are involved in decision-making, we build a stronger and more inclusive world for everyone.
How can allies like family, communities, or governments support girls in realizing their vision for the future?
Support should begin at home, with families encouraging girls to dream big and pursue their ambitions. Communities can help by providing safe spaces, programmes, and workshops that promote gender equality. Governments, too, need to step up by ensuring that legal protections are in place and that girls have access to education and resources. By working together, we can dismantle stereotypes and build a society where everyone is valued equally.
What are your hopes for the future of girls, and what advice would you give to other young girls aspiring for change?
I hope for a future where gender equality is a reality, not just a goal on paper. I want girls everywhere to feel empowered to chase their dreams without fear or limitation. To other young girls out there, I would say: believe in yourself, speak up and do not be afraid to take action. Change may not come overnight, but with persistence and courage, you can shape the world you want to live in. Do not give up, step bravely and boldly towards the realization of your future!
