Popular Russian social media platform Odnoklassniki kicks off campaign on ending violence against women

Social media network Odnoklassniki (OK) and UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia have launched an awareness-raising campaign #NeMolchite (Do not be silent) in support of the global 16 Days of Activism campaign.

Date:

The campaign offers users of OK special frames for their profile photos. When installing the frames, users will see a video about what actions they can take to support women and girls who experience violence.

#NeMolchite frames will help users to support women who may be experiencing abuse, including their friends, relatives, neighbors or coworkers. Each user who installs the frame for their profile photo will also get a chance to share information about the campaign. Frames automatically create a post encouraging friends to join the movement against violence.

Thanks to #NeMolchite frames, OK users will have an opportunity to become part of the global community on combating violence. They’ll be able to join the official UN Women group in OK and get connected to like-minded people and access information on violence against women and supporting survivors of violence. UN Women page also publishes information about different types of violence and how to recognize them.

The global campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence starts every year on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on 10 December, International Human Rights Day. This year's theme is "Orange the world: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!". The official color of the 16 days campaign is orange, symbolizing a vibrant, non-violent world.

Odnoklassniki regularly holds social projects that supports gender equality. On 2 December, OK hosted a live conversation entitled “Violence, Divorce, Children: How to cope with the manipulations of former intimate partners,” including participants Irina Zhivova, a mother of two children and a survivor of domestic violence and Victoria Dergunova, a lawyer with expertise in family law. The conversation was hosted by Anna Rivina, director of "Nasiliu.net" and moderated by Natalia Rodikova, editor-in-chief of Domashny Ochag.
