Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan on statistics organized a Round table dedicated to the improvement of gender statistics in Kazakhstan

10 April 2012, Astana – Aimed at getting into a constructive dialogue between producers and users of statistical information and identifying main directions of development, Statistics Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan organized a Round table dedicated to the improvement of gender statistics in Kazakhstan.

The Round table was attended by the representatives of the National Commission for Women and Family-Demographic Policy under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Culture and Information, JSC "Entrepreneurship Development Fund Damu", UN Women Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and Asian Development Bank.

The subjects discussed at the round table varied from the indicators of "women's entrepreneurship" and gender perspective in media to issues of domestic violence against women. Social and political importance of statistical recording of self-employed (including migrants and domestic workers) has been discussed and specific recommendations on introduction and inclusion of new gender indicators into the statistical bulletin "Women and Men of Kazakhstan" given.

Representatives of business and non-governmental organizations made suggestions to conduct a conjunctural research of the structure and credit history of borrowers taking into account a gender component; include information about NGOs activities into the state statistics; assist the Agency in conducting a sample survey on domestic violence.

As a result of the Round Table, recommendations have been drafted for the further development of gender statistics and the interaction between state bodies, NGOs and international organizations. One of the recommendations was to overview together with the Gender Theme Group of the UN agencies in Kazakhstan gender indicators developed under the departmental and national statistics using approaches which would allow tracking implementation progress of the CEDAW, Beijing Platform for Action, and the MDGs (harmonized matrix of indicators, etc.).
