The UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and the European Institute for Gender Equality are convening a side event titled “Gender Sensitive Parliaments: Inclusive Institutions” at the UNECE Regional Forum for Sustainable Development. While 2024 is being described as a “super election year” where a majority of eligible voters in the region will have an opportunity to cast a ballot, this side event will explore the potential of gender sensitive parliaments for building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions for all. With the subsequent new convocations of legislative institutions, what more can parliaments do to advance gender equality? How can parliaments better provide equal opportunities for women and men to hold office, influence decision-making processes, and produce gender sensitive legislation?

The side event will focus on showcasing exemplary approaches to fostering gender-sensitive parliaments in the region, offering practical insights and inspirational examples drawn from various parliamentary experiences and available tools. The panel will highlight specific recommendations, innovative strategies, and successful practices customized to regional needs, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and the development of targeted policy solutions.

The event will be conducted in English.
