UN Women in Tajikistan together with GIZ office organized a round table to celebrate Gender Day and discuss gender equality issues in Tajikistan. The goal of the event was to strengthen joint efforts to empower rural women in Tajikistan and address their health needs. The participants of the event were given an opportunity to highlight the progress achieved in improving the women’s lives and gender equality at rural level in the country.

The event brought together the representatives of governmental agencies, civil society organizations, UN Agencies, and local partners. All participants received Madam Michelle Bachelet, UN Women Executive Director’s message on International Women’s Day which gave the meaningful start to event organizers’ presentations and discussions.

A model of women empowerment and activities focused on rural women, especially family members of labor migrants, carried by UN Women GDG and CARMP Projects was presented by UN Women Communications Specialist Ms. Muhabbat Yakubova and Programme Associate Ms. Zarina Urakova. The presentation was supplemented with screening of a film developed in the frames of the given projects (can be found at: http://youtu.be/UiPiucoY4lE).

“UN Women’s global priority for 2012 is advancing women’s economic empowerment, political participation, and leadership. We are glad UN Women shared this agenda in Tajikistan with the Government, international and local partners, and civil society organizations,” said Aziza Hamidova, UN Women Gender and Governance Adviser in Tajikistan.

The status and gender roles in health, and exercising reproductive rights by men and women were highlighted in the presentation made by Ms. Evelina Toteva, GIZ Deputy Director. “Gender equality is the essential aspect in all GIZ projects. Access to health is a fundamental right of people and GIZ mobilizes all groups in the society to ensure women and men have equal voices making health and reproductive choices,” she added.

Presentations were followed by discussions with participants, who brought to the attention of the audience their opinions, positions, and visions with regard to the Gender Day’s subject. As it was stressed by organizers of the event, experiences from the field, opinions of experts, and life stories helped them in getting better understanding and assessment of their programs and learn about possible partnerships and new interventions. “The most beautiful feature of the event is the fact we came here from whole range of the sectors – health, education, economic development, uniformed structures, civil society, UN - and have a discussion how to address gender inequality in our sectors and all together,” stressed Ms. Dilorom Sadykova, Advisor to the Minister of Health of the RT.

“Women in Tajikistan are the most vulnerable and we are happy to see too many partners willing and able to help us in implementation of our agenda,” added Ms. Marifat Shokirova, Head of the Gender Department, Committee of Women and Family Affairs at the Government of Tajikistan.

“I am proud to be today a part of this event, because I see how step by step, little by little, gender issues become not declarative, but actual priorities of our partners,” summarized Ms. Munira Inoyatova, gender expert.
