Luhansk oblast, Ukraine - First training of trainers of police force was conducted today to promote efficient, effective and gender just policing services in Ukraine as well to become more responsive to the distinct needs and interests of women and men.

The first batch of 17 female and male police officers in Severodonetsk, Luhansk oblast will become equipped trainers at the UN Women-organized five-day training course, which was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Interior of Ukraine, UNDP and Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health. The training course was designed for patrol, district and juvenile prevention officers.

With strengthened knowledge about community security and skills for prevention and response to gender-based violence (GBV) the police officers will later build community partnerships to address the issue of low reporting by survivors of violence and adequately respond to the cases of GBV.

Training of police about international and national legislation on GBV including domestic violence, women’s human rights, community-police partnership and survivor-centered approaches, is a concerted national effort to improve community security and prevention and response to GBV.

The event is being organized within the framework of UN Women-UNDP joint programme, “Restoration of Governance and Reconciliation in crisis-affected communities in Ukraine” supported by the European Union.
