Activists from five Central Asian countries discussed urgent gender equality issues with UN Women Regional Director

As part of her visit to Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, Ms. Alia El-Yassir, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia met with youth and civil society representatives of five Central Asian countries, government officials and UN agencies in Kyrgyzstan. Violence against women and girls, women’s economic and political empowerment, stereotypes and active involvement of youth in all processes were the main topics of discussions.

Guljahon Bobosadykova is the chairperson of the Tajik coalition, From Equality de Jure to Equality de Facto. Nearly 25 years ago, she represented her country at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, which was the largest gathering ever held of gender equality advocates. During the Conference, she was the chairwoman of the Association of Women with University Education. She offers her perspective to UN Women on gender equality and the challenges that women still face in Tajikistan and Central Asia.

One of the oldest and most popular sports clubs in Turkey, with a large fan base of 25 million around the world, Fenerbahce Sports Club, aims to set an example globally by becoming gender-sensitive and inclusive sports club, thanks to UN Women`s HeForShe collaboration. Twenty-four Fenerbahce Sports Club staff are now trainers in gender equality and women’s rights after successfully completing a three-day trainer-of-trainers session, entitled: `Gender Equality Seminars’ on 31 July 2019.

Akkaya is a Turkish woman attending courses at UN Women’s SADA Women Empowerment and Solidarity Centre in Gaziantep in the southeast of Turkey. Co-financed by the European Union and the Government of Japan, and run in partnership with Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, Association for Solidarity with Asylum Seekers and Migrants, and International Labour Organisation, the center offers livelihood, psycho-social, referral and vocational training for both refugee and local women. Akkaya spoke to UN Women about how her experience at the Center helped strengthen social cohesion and solidarity in her community.

Mirela Arqimandriti is an Albanian activist for gender equality and the advancement of women’s rights and the Executive Director of the Gender Alliance for Development Centre (GADC). GADC, in collaboration with local civil society organizations (CSOs) and the Albanian Women Empowerment Network (AWEN), is implementing the project “Building capacities of CSOs to monitor the implementation of activities related to the reduction of gender-based violence and domestic violence of the National Strategy and Action Plan on Gender Equality 2016-2020” in six municipalities of Albania. The project is part of the EU-UN Women regional programme on ending violence against women in the Western Balkans and Turkey, “Implementing Norms, Changing Minds,” funded by the European Union.
