Dilyora Mammadova, a woman living with HIV from Tajikistan, is working with affected women and high-risk groups, helping identify new cases of local HIV infection, supporting women with the same diagnosis, and bringing them medicine. Through a joint UN Women- UNAIDS project for women living with HIV in 2019, her small sewing workshop and her business proposal received funding. Nowadays, due to the high demand for COVID-19 protection masks, Mammadova is supplying masks.

Gulyaim Dobutova, 39 years old, is a school librarian in Arka village of Batken province in Kyrgyzstan, along the border with Tajikistan. Together with her self-help group, Yntimak, which means solidarity in Kyrgyz, she launched a bakery center, specializing in traditional pastry and confectionary products.

Nearly 25 years ago, she represented her country at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, which was the largest gathering ever held of gender equality advocates. During the Conference, she was the chairwoman of the Association of Women with University Education. She offers her perspective to UN Women on gender equality and the challenges that women still face in Tajikistan and Central Asia.
