Four-day training on “Monitoring of Women’s Human Rights Towards Efficient Implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security” was conducted in Bishkek

The aim of the programme is to enhance the capacity of Women’s human rights activists and gender equality advocates and their networks to effectively and meaningfully engage, influence, and mobilize for dialogues on security and peace issues at various levels nationally and regionally in Southern Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan), South Asia (Pakistan and Afghanistan), and Central Asia / Fergana Valley (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan).

“When we talk about women's human rights, those countries that have a high degree of human development show a high degree of prosperity and equity. These countries offer human rights security to their citizens, including women, and are most advanced on the rocky road towards gender equality. Therefore this training has been an excellent opportunity for the participants to increase their knowledge in the area of human rights monitoring“, said Dr. Sabine Machl, UN Women Representative in Kyrgyzstan.

“The European Union is committed to strengthening the role of national partners in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in peace and reconciliation efforts and in the protection of women's human rights. Women can play a crucial role in advocating for reconciliation, tolerance-building and for authorities to comply with women’s human rights obligations. It is very encouraging to witness the engagement of so many women in this important process right now in the Fergana Valley.” said during her opening remarks Giuseppina Grillo, Project Manager, EU Delegation to Kyrgyzstan.

The training was conducted for twenty selected human rights and gender experts from the countries of the Fergana Valley: Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It addressed topics such as: Understanding Security and Gender Based Violence, Gender Analysis of Conflict and Violence, Human Rights and Human Rights of Women, Human Rights Monitoring, UNSCR 1325, 1820, 1888, 1889 and 1960: Purpose, Provisions and Indicators, Data collection methods, Interview Protocol and Documenting the Interview, Country Monitoring Plan and Monitoring template.

“Providing experts with this new set of skills will enable to better document trends and cases of women rights abuses and thus mobilize national partners at local level to engage in evidence-based dialogues and advocacy for reconciliation, tolerance building and compliance with women’s human rights obligations” said Graziella Piga, Manager of the Cross-regional programme.

The training was welcomed by all participants who expressed full satisfaction on the work conducted and expertise of UN Women Consultant, Ms. Zumrat Salmorbekova. The training also provided an excellent opportunity to enhance networking and exchange of experiences among the gender activists working in the Fergana Valley.
