On September 17, 2012 participants of the Round Table “Improvement of gender statistics indicators: problems and perspectives” discussed pathways to strengthening instruments for collection of gender statistical data. The event was organized by the Representative Office of the National Democratic Institute in Kazakhstan, UN Women Sub-regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia and the Agency on Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

In the course of the event, participants discussed several problems with collection of gender statistics which closely correlate to the recommendations aimed at strengthening the instruments of gender equality evaluation in different areas of social and economic development, with a special focus on public administration. These recommendations were developed under the NDI’s project aimed at developing comprehensive approach and improving mechanisms of realization of the national gender policies. The project, which has been implemented in close cooperation with UN Women and civil society experts, encompasses development of practical improvements of the mechanisms for promoting women’s leadership and gender equality.

The event attracted representatives of different ministries and civil society organizations, who jointly identified opportunities for development of new approaches in selection of gender statistics indicators for monitoring activities of non-governmental organizations. Discussed opportunities included development of uniform system of monitoring and evaluation of NGOs’ contribution to social and economic development of the country with clear definition of criteria and mechanisms of interaction with the state structures. Also participants highlighted importance of strengthening public administration statistics by initiating development of decision-making definition methodology which would be closely linked to gender equality promotion in Kazakhstan.
