Huriye Göncüoğlu Bodur attended the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva on 6–7 April 2022. Bodur’s work contributes to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 Life Below Water, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development. Her work also relates to SDG 5 on achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls.

Rashima Kwatra is a young, lesbian, migrant, feminist who took active part at the 2022 Regional Forum on Sustainable Development for the UNECE region. She works as an International Advocacy Advisor for RFSL - the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Intersex Persons’ Rights. Kwatra advocates for the inclusion of persons with diverse sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics, as well as other historically marginalized groups, across both human rights and sustainable development spaces.

Özlem Altıparmak is a lawyer based in Izmir, a western province of Turkey. She is an activist working in the fields of human rights, gender equality, climate change, and environmental protection for almost 20 years in Turkey. She is the legal advisor of Doga (Nature) Association, a grassroots organization defending the rights of nature and taking action to sustain biodiversity. She attended the Regional Forum on Sustainable Development in April 2022 held in Geneva with the support of UN Women Turkey, which she describes as a critical milestone in her activism.

This year, the sixty-sixth session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW66), the UN’s largest gathering on gender equality, is taking place 14 to 25 March 2022. This young aspiring surgeon invented a device for medical and infectious waste disposal that received international patent protection from the World Intellectual Property Organization in Geneva.

Oksana Nikiforova was displaced shortly after the armed conflict broke out in eastern Ukraine in May 2014. Trying to provide her five-year-old daughter and newborn son with a safer place to live, she left Luhansk without any prospects for her future. Nikiforova and her family changed several cities in Ukraine, applied for refugee status in Poland and finally settled down in Novoaidar, a small town in Luhansk region. Five years after fleeing her home, Nikiforova decided to start a new life and take matters into her own hands. She mobilized a women’s self-help group and created an NGO to change her community and meet women’s needs.

Inspired by programming for the past eight years, 17-year-old Mariam Lomtadze is the founder of Looper and tech start-ups Hero and FarmApp. Currently working on developing Android mobile apps while taking a gap year after graduating high school, Mariam participated in a hackathon to find innovative ways to visualise gender data at the UN Women-supported regional conference Gender Statistics: Challenges and Opportunities to Report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), held 24-26 July 2019 in Tbilisi. The hackathon was carried out with the support of the UN Women Global Gender Statistics Initiative and the Governments of Austria and Switzerland.
