UN Women’s collaboration with Fenerbahçe Sports Club aims to advance gender equality in and through sports, to eliminate gender stereotypes and transform harmful social norms in the sports ecosystem, to create an inclusive and safe environment for women and girls in sport and to encourage men and boys to become active allies in advancing gender equality by supporting UN Women’s HeForShe Movement.

Guidelines for gender-responsive sports organizations have been developed as a trail-blazing effort to translate the UN Women’s Sports for Generation Equality principles into a feasible step-by-step guide. The guidelines are structured to help sports organizations in terms of empowerment of women and girls and advancement of gender equality through concrete and quantifiable actions and indicators. They aim to mobilize action on gender equality in day-to-day and overall operations.

This brief focuses on the impacts of COVID-19 on women and girls in sports in five areas—leadership, gender-based violence, economic opportunities, media participation and representation, and girls’ participation in sport—and presents key recommendations to different actors in the sport ecosystem to respond to the crisis with a gender perspective and recover better in terms of gender equality.

HeForShe is a global solidarity movement initiated by UN Women inviting men and people of all genders to stand in solidarity with women to create a bold, visible, and united force for gender equality. Recognizing the power of sports to change lives, UN Women Turkey is collaborating with sports organizations to empower women and girls and tear down gender barriers and discrimination. In 2018, UN Women Turkey and Fenerbahçe Sports Club joined forces with the support of Tüpraş, one of the companies of Koç Holding, and Impact Champion of HeForShe.
