Co-led and developed by UN Women on behalf of the Regional Gender Taskforce, this gender brief analyzes the access to employment and livelihoods of refugees from Ukraine and its gendered impacts. This is done through a review of key barriers (women) refugees face to building livelihoods, an identification of good practices adopted thus far, and 38 recommendations for how actors in the humanitarian response can address these barriers moving forward.

This publication presents data about general occupational safety and health and sexual harassment in the workplace in Kosovo* including the private and public sector.

This publication showcases the results of the quiz on sexual violence, which was taken by citizens in five BiH cities and online during the 16 Days of Activism campaign in 2022. The quiz featured a selection of questions the citizens answered in order to test their knowledge about sexual violence and harassment, prevalence of violence, key elements of consent, and related legislation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Handbook for youth on gender-based and intimate partner violence is useful manual that in a brief and concise way gives an overview of all forms of gender-based violence, as well as information on how to react in a situation of violence, how to recognize and report violence. Moreover, the handbook contains list of available support services of civil society organizations in Serbia that are competent in this field.

Moving towards the Gender Equality Index, Bosnia and Herzegovina 2022 presents data and index scores for two full domains, Knowledge and Power and the partial data and index sources for Work and Health as set by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) methodology on analysing the state of gender equality in a society. The report will support the establishment of an evidence base for future effots in achievieng gender equality.

In the UN Decade for Action on Gender Equality, people around the world have pledged to move from rhetoric to action and to work together to drive lasting change, starting now. Through the 2021 Generation Equality Forum in Mexico and France, world leaders and partners committed to eliminating gender inequalities and to financing and implementing laws, policies, and programmes to meet priority actions and targets in a Global Acceleration Plan for Gender Equality. The aim is simple but profound: deliver irreversible, quantifiable results for women and girls in all their diversity.

As healthcare providers are an essential, life-saving link between women experiencing violence and women’s specialist services, the regional assessment aims to analyze cooperation between women’s civil society organizations and healthcare providers in Western Balkans countries – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, the Republic of North Macedonia, Serbia – and Turkey, including the challenges arising from the pandemic.

Violence against women and girls in public places is widespread. To measure the level of safety of women and girls in public spaces throughout Serbia, UN Women joined forces with Citizens’ Assocciation FemPlatz to give the detailed overview and analyse experiences, factors and elements that are present in lives of women and girls in the domain of public safety.

During November and December 2021, during the 16 Days of Activism campaign, UN Women aimed at focusing the public discourse around the issue of sexual violence against women in Bosnia and Herzegovina to deepen the discussions on specific challenges in protection of and support for survivors of sexual violence.

The objective of the gender-responsive crisis management guidebook is to develop practical and functional guidelines for private sector to address crisis in a gender responsive way. It is highly likely that future crises, whether it is another pandemic, natural disaster, mass migration, security or technology issue, will have their unique impact on gender equality. The lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic should allow businesses to prepare better for the next crises.

The policy paper “Promising practices of establishing and providing specialist support services for women experiencing sexual violence: A legal and practical overview for women’s NGOs and policymakers in the Western Balkans and Turkey” aims to serve national policymakers and women’s civil society organizations in the Western Balkans and Turkey as a learning tool for establishing and providing support services to women and children who experienced sexual violence, to eventually inform a national service provision framework.

This report captures Kosovar citizens’ knowledge of the gender equality legal framework, their perceptions and expectations regarding gender-based roles and behavior at home, and their attitudes towards changing or improving gender equality, violence against women, and domestic violence.

UN Women’s Country Gender Equality Brief (CGEB) provides a snapshot of the status of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Republic of Moldova, particularly as measured against the gender-related indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Framed under the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs, the CGEB also summarises if and how women from underrepresented groups are affected by a number of different discriminations.

As a part of the regional effort, UN Women conducted a Rapid Gender Assessment (RGA) survey in Bosnia and Herzegovina seeking to identify the impacts of COVID-19 on the population and specific implications of the impact on gender inequalities. The assessment concentrates on the gender aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina, focusing on how women’s and men’s lives have been impacted and changed in the face of COVID-19.

The “Regional Guidelines for Risk Assessment and Risk Management to Prevent the Recurrence and Escalation of Violence Against Women” are designed to inform and support relevant authorities tasked with dealing with cases of violence against women, including institutions in the chain of protection of women from violence, when creating measures and policies to prevent violence against women and its escalation. The guidelines were developed by the Center of Women’s Rights, based in Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the UN Women’s regional programme on ending violence against women in the Western Balkans and Turkey "Implementing Norms, Changing Minds," funded by the European Union.

The UN Development Programme in collaboration with UN Women and UN Food and Agriculture Organization led the socio-economic assessment of the impact on businesses and households in Ukraine. This report presents an assessment of the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on Ukraine, with a focus on those groups which are, or have become vulnerable due to the pandemic, as well as the impact on micro, small and medium enterprises.

This publication provides an overview of key results achieved by UN Women in terms of COVID-19 response and recovery in its programme countries and territories in Europe and Central Asia between March and August 2020.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, shrinking working hours, increased care burdens, and heightened violence have exacerbated the challenges that women and girls face. Unless action is taken, by 2021 around 435 million women and girls will be living in extreme poverty, including 47 million pushed into poverty as a result of COVID-19. This publication presents the latest evidence on the multiple impacts of the pandemic on women and girls.
