On February 6th, 2023, Türkiye was struck by two significant earthquakes that resulted in widespread devastation in the Southeast region of the country, affecting 11 provinces with a population of around 14 million (16.4% of the total population of the country). This brief explains the impact of the earthquake, needs and priorities of women and girls and UN Women's response efforts on the ground.

The research looks into how the implementation of good practices on community policing could contribute to prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls at the community level. This publication also provides recommendations to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and National Police of Ukraine on community policing and prevention violence against women and girls.

The findings of the assessment reveal inter alia a very low number of protection orders issued in the conflict-affected Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine. This points out to low awareness of survivors of domestic violence about this protection mechanism, as well as poor quality of the legal advice received in such cases. Additionally, the assessment results show that there is a high burden of proof imposed on survivors and that children witnesses of domestic violence are rarely recognized as victims of domestic violence.

The fireflies campaign against gender based cyber violence draws attention to the issue to create a global e-solidarity network. The campaign conducted by UN Women Turkey and financed by Sweden through Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) reveals the outcomes of the campaign.

A practitioner's guide to the community mobilization for empowerment (CME) is a step-by-step manual on the process of implementing community mobilization for empowerment, intended for the mobilizers in local communities, civil society organizations' staff and volunteers, as well as members of the self-help groups. The foundations for CME are based on human rights and gender equality. The process helps to address discrimination and to demonstrate the benefits of embracing diversity.

This publication gives an overview of the online conference marking the 20th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It provides an overview of the discussion among the key stakeholders in the country and the region on the achievements and new challenges related to security of women and girls, and of key results of the implementation of resolution 1325 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Under the "Women in Elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina" project, UN Women produced a Guide intended to inform political parties in considering different strategies for strengthening women's political participation and their political influence in political processes by reinforcing parties’ internal structures. The Guide is intended for all political parties in Bosnia and Herzegovina, regardless of whether they have dealt with gender equality issues on a systemic level before or not.

This publication features the findings of safety audits of public spaces, as well as the results of online surveys and focus group discussions conducted with women from the conflict-affected communities of Soledar and Toretsk in Donetsk region and Novoaidar and Zolote in Luhansk region, in eastern Ukraine.

This brief shines a light on the critical role of women’s leadership in responding to COVID-19 and preparing for a more equitable recovery. In addition to considering the pandemic’s immediate impacts on women’s political participation, the brief demonstrates the opportunity to “build back better” by including and supporting women, and the organizations and networks that represent them, in the decision-making processes that will ultimately shape the post-pandemic future.

The Rapid Gender Assessment examines how the COVID-19 crisis affects the socio-economic situation and livelihood of women and men in North Macedonia. It provides insights to the situation at a specific moment in time between the outbreak of COVID-19 and field research conducted between 8 and 20 May. It provides recommendations for policymakers to integrate gender perspectives in policies and measures during the response and recovery phases.

The mapping analysis examines how the COVID-19 crisis affects the socio-economic situation and wellbeing of women and men at the local level and identifies immediate interventions by the municipalities to respond to the crisis. Focusing mainly on the perceptions of local gender equality mechanisms, it provides recommendations for supporting the municipalities in identifying gender specific measures and prioritizing allocation of resources in the post-recovery period.

The briefing note is prepared for women leaders and politicians to guide them in the planning and implementation of gender-sensitive COVID-19 response and recovery efforts.
