Mapping and Analysis of Vulnerable Groups of Women in North Macedonia

Despite a strong legal framework guaranteeing equality and non-discrimination, many women in North Macedonia continue to face barriers that limit their access to opportunities, services, and decision-making. While the country has adopted important laws and strategies to promote gender equality, gaps remain between policies on paper and realities in everyday life, especially for women from marginalized or vulnerable groups. 

This comprehensive UN Women analysis examines the intersecting economic, social, and health-related vulnerabilities that leave marginalized women behind.

Populations in Focus

The publication maps the specific challenges faced by:

• Rural women
• Roma women
• Women with disabilities
• Women facing barriers in the labor market and access to public services

Key Thematic Gaps

The report highlights critical disparities in:

• Political representation and leadership
• Economic participation and employment
• Healthcare access
• Protection from gender-based violence and intersecting discrimination

Research Methodology

To ensure a holistic understanding of these inequalities, the analysis draws on insights from around 700 participants across all eight regions of the country. Data was gathered through:

• Desk research and official statistics
• Surveys, interviews, and focus groups
• Consultations with civil society representatives, community leaders, and public institutions

By identifying these structural challenges, this report provides the evidence and recommendations necessary to support policy development, strengthen advocacy, and guide programmes that promote women’s empowerment and equal opportunities for all women and girls in North Macedonia.
