At the global conference, UN Women will highlight its new groundbreaking, multigenerational campaign, “Generation Equality: Realizing women’s rights for an equal future” to mark the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
Despite some progress, real change has been too slow for most women and girls in the world, and we see significant pushback in many places against their leadership and agency.
Not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. As a result, women continue to be discriminated against, and their contributions are undervalued. They work more, earn less and have fewer choices about their bodies, livelihoods and futures than men. They experience multiple forms of violence at home, at work and in public spaces.
Generation Equality demands real change.
It seeks urgent, intentional actions from governments to renew their commitments to gender equality, and to invest in policies and programmes that make gender equality a lived reality.
It seeks multigenerational dialogues and partnerships, engaging men and women, young and old, all of society, as we count down to year 2020, when several galvanizing moments in the 21st century women’s rights movement come together, including: the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, 20th anniversary of UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, 5th anniversary of the Sustainable Development Goals, and 10th anniversary of UN Women’s establishment as the global champion for the empowerment of women and girls.
