Moldovan girls and boys jointly with high-level government officials say NO to violence against women

Chisinau, 25 November 2012 - Young girls and boys jointly with representatives of state institutions, Ms Valentina Buliga, Minister of Labour, Social Protection and Family, Mr. Dorin Recean, Minister of Internal Affairs, Ms Nicola Harrintgon-Buhay, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Her Excellency, Ms Ingrid Tersman, Ambassador of Sweden to Moldova, Ms Marie Moser, Embassy of USA to Moldova, and civil society, Ms Angelina Zaporojan, Director of Center for Women’s Rights, gathered in Chisinau, capital of Moldova, to Say NO to Violence against Women on International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

The first event of the planned UN Women activities during 16 Days Campaign of Activism against Gender based Violence in Moldova had the purpose to raise awareness among general public on the issue of violence against women and girls. 2012 is a significant year for Moldova as the 16 Days Campaign is being organized for the 10th time.

According to national study on “Violence against Women in Family” every 7th out of 10 women in rural area and every 6th out of 10 women in urban area suffered violence from the side of spouse/partner. According to the findings of the study women face different forms of violence: physical, sexual, psychological, spiritual and economic.

Young people called for immediate action to support victims of violence and encouraged women-victims of violence not to remain silent and seek for support. Their general message was “UNiTE to End Violence against Women”. Together with high level government officials students constructed the UNiTE ribbon to demonstrate readiness and unity against violence against women.

The outdoor event was organized by UN Women with the support of Y-Peer, Radio Moldova Tineret, LeaderShe team, Center of Young Journalist and State Pedagogical University Ion Creanga. UN Women in Moldova will continue to support 16 Days Campaign implementation jointly with other partners by organizing an exhibition of photos and drawings, TV programme and a local public debate.
