Tajikistan Taekwondo Federation promotes zero tolerance to VAW

Federation of Taekwondo and Kickboxing Team of Tajikistan has initiated awareness campaign against violence against women at the World Championship held from 4 to 14 of September in the capital of North Korea.
The objective of the campaign held in the framework of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Global Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” was to invite other male athletes to join Global campaign to end violence against women across the world. The team called for active participation of all authorities and participants of the championship, which gathered over 800 athletes from 84 countries, to become active advocates of the UNiTE campaign.

During the championship the National Federation team met with athletes, coaches, judges and heads of other international taekwondo federations to conduct outreach activities, disseminate awareness raising materials and invite them to join to the UN Secretary General’s Global Campaign “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women."In the course of the championship Tajik Taekwondo and Kickboxing team has met with the Chairman of the Women's Committee of the International Federation of Taekwondo (IFT) Ms. Linda Low, and called IFT to join UNiTE campaign and promote zero tolerance to VAW at the World Championships worldwide.
As a result of the campaign held by the Tajik Taekwondo and Kickboxing team, the president of the International Federation of Taekwondo Professor Chang Ung, stressed the intention of to increase the number of women in the leadership positions at IFT bringing it to at least of 20%. Mr. Leon Wai Meng, the Chairman of the Judicial Committee called all international federations to ensure attracting more judges and referees among women in future competitions, which, in its turn, will create a platform for the advancement of women's sports and gender equality. Upon return to Tajikistan, the team also intends to actively take part in promotion of the National Advocacy Campaign “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” and becoming the advocates of the adoption of the law on domestic violence in Tajikistan. This year campaign is supported by UN Women, UNFPA, and UNAIDS offices in Tajikistan.
