UN Women is organizing an international conference in Ankara on 16 January 2019 in partnership with Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, with the financial support of the European Union (EU) Regional Trust Fund for Syrian Refugees. Zehra Zümrüt Selçuk, the Minister of Family, Labour and Social Services of Turkey and Fatma Şahin, the Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality will participate at the conference together with high-level representatives from the international community, the UN and civil society. The conference will highlight the importance of ensuring gender-sensitive refugee response and advocating for greater involvement of refugee women and women from the host communities in decision-making and planning processes.

The conference has been organized in the context of the regional project “Strengthening the Resilience of Women and Girls and Host Communities in Iraq, Jordan and Turkey” funded by the European Union Regional Trust Fund for Syrian Refugees, the Government of Japan and the Government of Iceland. The project is implemented by UN Women, in partnership with Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, International Labour Organization and Association for Asylum Seekers and Migrants in Turkey.

Irena Vojáčková-Sollorano, UN Resident Coordinator; Alia El-Yassir, UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia; Simona Gatti, Minister Counsellor at the Delegation of the EU to Turkey; and Yoichi Mikami, Minister Counsellor at the Embassy of Japan will also attend the conference with other participants from public institutions, local authorities, the EU and the donor community, UN agencies and national and international civil society organizations, experts, women refugee rights advocates, as well as refugee women.
