Infographics: Women and Girl Asylum Seekers in the European Union

Women can receive refugee status in EU Member States if they are persecuted based on their race, nationality, religion, social grouping or political beliefs. But these five grounds do not always include sexual and gender based persecution. As the UN Women Report on the Legal Rights of Women and Girly Asylum Seekers in the European Union argues, recognizing gender as a self standing basis of persecution in national legislation would help ensures that survivors of vicious gender crimes are better protected and provided asylum.
