Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Representative to Turkey

Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir was appointed as UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia and Representative to Turkey in November 2013.

Born in Iceland, prior to her appointment as Regional Director, Ms. Gisladottir worked as UN Women Country Director in Afghanistan from 2011 to 2013, was Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland from 2007 to 2009, a Member of Parliament from 1991 to 1994 and from 2005 to 2009 and Chair of the Social Democratic Alliance – the country’s second largest political party. A member of the City Council of Reykjavík for 18 years, she was Mayor from 1994 to 2003.

Ms. Gisladottir holds a degree in history and literature from the University of Iceland and did post-graduate studies and research in history at the University of Copenhagen from 1979 to 1981.
